US MARKET

Stocks climbed Wednesday, with investors starting off the third quarter on a positive note, after reports on manufacturing and housing added to bets that the pace of the recession is slowing.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.7% (+57.1 pts,close 8,504.1).

The Nasdaq gained 0.6% (+10.7 pts, close 1,845.7) and the S&P 500 index gained 0.6% (+10.7 pts, close1,845.7).

In currency trading, the dollar fell versus the euro and gained against the yen. U.S. light crude oil for August delivery fell 58 cents to settle at US$69.31 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. (CNNmoney)
